Paradise Shelduck
The Paradise Shelduck (Tadorna variegata) is native to New Zealand and its offshore islands. This large duck is notable for its loud call and the widely different markings of the sexes. It is not a true duck as its bone structure is in some ways closer to that of a goose. The ducks form breeding pairs that stay together throughout the year and start to nest in August (late winter). The chicks have very distinctive black and white plumage.
