This page covers our selection of horticultural and botanical stock photos of trees, shown mostly in garden settings. Trees may be evergreen or deciduous, broadleaf or coniferous and define a habitat or garden because they set the tone for all of the other plants. Just as the nature of a European woodland is determined by the light shade and leaf-mould provided by a canopy of deciduous trees, and the tropical rainforests by its dense cover of lush evergreen foliage, so a garden is usually defined by the trees that enclose it.
Trees may be grown for their form, foliage or flowers. Simply because of their size, trees are imposing plants that demand attention, but many are beautifully shaped and may have additional features, such as colourful bark. Tree foliage can be attractive at any stage: when young it may be red or a lush bright green, when mature it can be attractive in form and colour, and with age it may develop brilliant tones, which is especially so with many of the deciduous trees. Again, simply because of their size, flowering trees can make a spectacular display even if their individual flowers are quite simple.
The most photographed genera, such as Prunus, are listed as subcategories on their own image pages, which can be visited by clicking on the links below. Genera of which we have only a few pictures are listed in the Other Trees category.
