Agathis - Kauri
A page of stock pictures of kauris (genus Agathis). Agathis is a genus of evergreen coniferous trees in the same family as the Monkey Puzzle and Norfolk Pine (Araucariaceae). They occur from Southeast Asia around the southern Pacific and the eastern coast of Australia to New Zealand. The best-know species are the Queensland Kauri (Agathis robusta) and the New Zealand Kauri (Agathis australis), both of which can reach 50m tall.
The New Zealand Kauri was widely exploited for its hard, durable timber during the nineteenth century and old forest areas were also dug over for the resinous gum left by long-fallen trees. Consequently wild stands of New Zealand Kauri are now rare, though the tree is widely cultivated.
