Lanz Tractors
A page of stock pictures of Lanz tractors. Lanz was a German company based in Mannheim. Heinrich Lanz established his company in 1859 and in 1902 visited the United States where he forged a link with Charles Deere, John Deere's son. Pre-WWII Lanz products featured semi-diesel motors designed to run on a variety of fuels, a handy feature in areas where fuel distribution was often erratic. The large, low-revving single-cylinder units create a distinctive engine note and are most often started by hand compression, which requires pre-heating a small reservoir of fuel at front of the motor. This can be a tricky procedure and Lanz starting races are popular at shows. The factory was heavily bombed in WWII but recovered to resume production post-war. Lanz was taken over by John Deere in 1956 and a few Lanz tractors were produced in the John Deere green and yellow colour scheme. The Lanz name disappeared during the 1960s but the Mannheim plant still produces John Deere tractors.
