Aveling and Porter
A page pf photographs of Aveling and Porter traction engines or steam tractors. Because of his many widely adopted technical innovations Thomas Aveling is known as "The Father of the Traction Engine". A farmer from Rochester, Kent, England, he established an engineering company in 1850 and designed a steam engine that was built for him in 1859 by Clayton and Shuttleworth. He built his first machine in 1862 and built the first steam roller in 1867, subsequently producing more rollers than any other company. The oldest surviving road locomotive is an 1870 Aveling and Porter. Also surviving is machine 721, an 1871 traction engine. Later know as Aveling-Barford, the company continued until the late 1940s.
