Tacca - Bat Plant, Devil Flower
Stock photos of Bat Plant or Devil Flower (plants of the genus Tacca), a group of 10 species of evergreen rhizomatous perennials found in the Southeast Asian and west African tropics. They have bold, heavily veined, dark green foliage but their most striking feature is their red-brown to purple-black flower heads, which are backed by similarly coloured, large, papery bracts and which sprout long, threadlike bracteoles. The effect is a little reminiscent of bat with extended wings and tail, hence the common name bat plant. The general colour and sinister look being the reason for the name Devil Flower. Perhaps more of a novelty than things of great beauty, they can become quite large and really need to be grown in a tropical climate of a suitably large conservatory or greenhouse.
