Epacris
Stock photos of plants of the genus Epacris. This genus of Australian and New Zealand natives occupies the niche filled by the ericas and callunas in other parts of the world. The New Zealand species are seldom grown, except by alpine or native plant enthusiasts, but two Australian species are common in gardens. Epacris longiflora and Epacris impressa are small to medium sized spreading shrubs with wiry stems and small pointed deep green leaves. Their tubular flowers are reminiscent of some of the South African ericas. The deep cerise pink flowers of Epacris impressa are the first to appear, usually in late winter. White and red flowered plants are occasionally available. Epacris longiflora blooms in spring and summer and has red flowers tipped with white. Other species that may be seen occasionally are Epacris purpurascens, an Australian native with reddish purple tubular flowers, and Epacris pauciflora, a New Zealand native with white starry flowers.
