This is a page of stock pictures of rural and agricultural shows. Even today much of New Zealand's economy is centered around pastoral industries, and farming is vital to the nation's well-being. Rural shows, also known as A & P Shows (Agricultural and Pastoral) are an important part of country life. They are the annual events where the entire community of a rural area gets together.
The shows usually feature animal competitions where prize livestock is judged. Horse events also make up a large part of many shows. Some even have more of a carnival or fairground atmosphere.
In addition to the rural areas, each of the large cities also stages an annual show. It's often referred to as "when the country comes to town". The two largest shows are the Auckland Easter Show and the Canterbury A & P Show, held in Christchurch in mid-November. Most of the country shows are one-day events, but the big shows run over several days. Very similar events occur across Australia.
