World Tractor Challenge
The Case IH World Tractor Challenge was held over the weekend of April 8-9, 2006 at Peter Butterick's farm near Ashburton, New Zealand. The aim was to set a world record for the number of tractors working simultaneously in one field. The record, set in 2004 in Australia, stood at 1901.
On the 8th a record was set for the most tractors in a continuous trek or convoy - 440 - and on the 9th an attempt was made at the tractors in the field record. A good day raised hopes that this record could be broken, but after all the counting was done the number stood at 1836.
Even so, it was a marvellous spectacle and one unlikely to soon be repeated locally. These pictures may provide some idea of the atmosphere, but really it was one of those events where you just had to be there to understand the experience.
