Merino Sheep
This is a page of stock pictures of Merino sheep. The Merino is an old sheep breed possibly dating back as far as the 12th century. First successfully introduced into Australia in 1797 and New Zealand in the 1834, it is popular for its fine-grained meat and particularly fine wool. It is renowned for its ability to survive temperature extremes, such as the severe cold of the high country of New Zealand's South Island, where it overwinters outdoors. Merinos tend to have heavily wrinkled skin, which can make them difficult to shear. Although this trait has been bred out of much of the South African and Australian stock it is still very apparent among New Zealand animals. Merinos are known for their long, curved horns, but naturally polled strains are also common.
