Washpen Falls
A page of stock pictures of the area around Washpen Falls near Windwhistle, Canterbury, New Zealand. The falls are part of Washpen Creek, a tributary of the Hororata River, which descends via the falls into a narrow canyon before flowing out to the Canterbury Plains. The area around the falls has been developed as a nature reserve and recreation area by the McElrea family, on whose farm the falls are located. The whole area is of considerable geological, biological and horticultural interest, containing volcanic rock formaions, many species of native wildlife and also stands of southern rata, which is rare on the eastern side of the Southern Alps. The Washpen Falls reserve has been part of the Project Crimson, which encourages the preservation and distribution of rata and pohutukawa, and has also received an award from Environment Canterbury.
