Tekapo to Mount Cook
The Mackenzie Country around Lake Tekapo, Canterbury is one of the driest areas of New Zealand and has a climate with harsh extremes of winter cold and summer heat. Lake Tekapo is a popular tourist stop and the site of the Church of the Good Shepherd, built to commemorate the pioneers, and of the Mount John Observatory. The Mackenzie Country is also the gateway to the Mount Cook National Park and New Zealand's highest mountain.
