stock photos of the Taieri Gorge Railway, Otago, New Zealand. This tourist rail journey departs from the Dunedin Railway Station and offer a choice of two return trips, one of 58km to Pukerangi and the other to Middlemarch, a journey of 77km. The railway passes through the spectacular Taieri Gorge, through 12 tunnels and over several bridges, including the Wingatui Viaduct, which at 179m long was and still is the largest wrought iron structure in New Zealand. Construction of the railway began in 1879 but did not reach Middlemarch until 1891 and eventually terminated at Cromwell in 1921. The line closed for general carriage in 1990 but was soon privately purchased for its current tourist use.
