French Landing Re-enactment
Akaroa was intended to be a French settlement but when the initial shipload of immigrants arrived from France on the Comte de Paris in July 1840 they found the area had already been claimed by the British in accordance with the Treaty of Waitangi, which had been signed in February of that year. Nevertheless, the settlers stayed and gave the area the French flavour it still has today. This selection of pictures shows a rather light-hearted re-enactment in September 2007 of the original landing.
