Dry Acheron and the Black Hole
While the Dry Acheron River, mid-Canterbury, New Zealand can, in wet periods, fill its wide gravel bed, for most of the year the surface is dry. However, the river continues to flow just below the rocks, revealed only by the grey-white trail of minerals that evaporate from it. Near the Dry Acheron at the base of a valley is a small but deep lake known as the Black Hole. Although the Black Hole is not fed by a permanent river, mountain run-off and artesian pressure combine the very porous soil to keep it filled.
