Primula - Primrose
Primula is a genus of some 400 species of perennials, with a few annuals, that occurs naturally over most of the Northern Hemisphere but especially in temperate Asia from northern Iran to Japan. Most species form basal rosettes of foliage, often covered with fine hair and/or a powdery bloom, from which emerges an erect flower stem topped with a single head or whorls of 5-petalled flowers. The flowering season is usually from mid-winter to early summer. There is a tendency for natural hybrids to occur and plant breeders have capitalised on this to produce a myriad of garden forms, the best known of which are the Polyanthus (Primula x pruhoniciana) or Pruhonicensis hybrids. Most primulas are woodland or low alpine meadow plants.
