Dianthus - Pinks
Dianthus, commonly known as Carnations or Pinks is a genus of around 300 species of tufting or spreading perennials largely confined to the Eurasian region. Most have rather grassy, blue-green leaves emerging directly from a dense basal clump or on wiry, spreading stems. The foliage color is the perfect foil for the flowers, which in the species are simple 5-petalled structures that are often powerfully fragrant, with a spicy scent. The common flower color is pink, but the name “pinks” come not from the color but the ragged petal edges, which appear as if cut with pinking shears. Most flower from late spring.
