Rhopalostylis - Nikau
This feather palm genus comprises just three species: Rhopalostylis sapida from New Zealand, Rhopalostylis cheesmanii from Raoul Island in the Kermadec Group and Rhopalostylis baueri from Norfolk Island.
Known as Nikau Palms, the genus is most commonly represented in cultivation by Rhopalostylis sapida, which is the most southerly occurring palm, being found down to around 43S near Akaroa, New Zealand. This species also occurs commonly in the northwest of the South Island, where it adds a tropical touch to the temperate rainforest.
