Phoenix - Date Palm
The genus Phoenix is made up of 17 species of feather palms found from the Canary Islands off the north-west African coast to tropical East Asia. The best known species is the commercial Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera), but other species are also widely cultivated, mainly as ornamentals. The best known of these are the Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) and the Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelinii)
Phoenix dactylifera is not really a true species, but a cultigen, probably a hybrid between Phoenix rupicola and Phoenix sylvestris.
