This is the opening page for our selection of horticultural and botanical stock pictures of orchids (plants of the family Orchidaceae). Orchids are among the most beautiful flowers. In the wild many of them occur as epiphytes. While not all are tender, as popularly imagined, most do have fairly precise growing requirements, though some of the hardy terrestrial species can be treated like any other herbaceous perennials. Many orchid genera have been extensively hybridised and their classification can be rather confusing. The most photographed genera, such as Paphiopedilum, are listed as subcategories on their own pages, while the less common types appear under the general category of Other Orchids.
