Ilex - Holly
Ilex or Holly is a mainly temperate zone genus of over 400 evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees, including a few scrambling or semi-climbing species. Many have lobed leaves tipped with sharp spines and the foliage is often a lustrous deep green. The flowers tend to white and rather small but are followed by showy berries, often in clusters. Because the fruit tends to last into winter or they have other useful characteristics, such as suitability for hedging, many hollies have become popular garden plants.
