Calathea
Found from Mexico to northern Argentina, Calathea is a genus of 300 evergreen, tuberous or rhizome rooted perennials of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae). Their bold and frequently strikingly marked elliptical foliage often resembles that of the marantas, and they are also commonly grown as house plants. Calatheas occur in three basic forms: dense clumps of short-stemmed leaves; more open clumps of leaves with long petioles; and those with their foliage on cane-like stems. The leaves can be as much as 1m long, though 15–25cm is more common. The flowers, backed by colored bracts, are usually held in a cone-like structure resembling a rattlesnake’s tail.
