Grevillea
Grevillea is a genus of around 250 species of evergreen shrubs and trees of the protea family. Most are indigenous to Australia with a few from New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea. The small flowers are usually densely crowded into heads or spikes, with long styles that are at first bent and then straighten out. There are three main flower types: the simple filamentous head or ‘spider flower’ with outward-facing styles; the ‘toothbrush’ with several rows of closely grouped flowers with upward-facing styles; and the bottlebrush, a long head with styles radiating outwards. The leaves are commonly deeply divided and can be very decorative, the foliage of some species being grown for cutting. There are many hybrid grevilleas.
