Ficus - Fig
Ficus is a large, varied genus consisting of around 800 species of evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs and climbers from tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world. It includes the common fig, Ficus carica, which bears edible fruit, but most species are grown for their ornamental foliage and for shade. The tiny flowers are completely enclosed in the developing fruits which are borne in the leaf axils and are produced all year. Ripe fruits are eaten by bats and birds and the seeds of many species are often dropped into the branches of other trees where they germinate, sending down roots to the ground. These eventually form secondary trunks that kill or “strangle” the host tree. Please visit the fig page in the bush and tree crops section to see images of the common edible fig Ficus carica.
