Blechnum
Blechnum ferns occur in around 200 species spread throughout the temperate and tropical zones, with the majority in the southern hemisphere. Size and growth form vary but most species have very short rhizomes or vertical stems with rosettes of fishbone-type fronds. In a few species a short trunk develops. New fronds are usually pink, red or bronze. In many species the fertile fronds are easily distinguished, being more erect with much narrower, thicker segments and, of course, a dense covering of spores.
