Desmoschoenus - Pingao
Stock photos of Pingao (Desmoschoenus spiralis), a coastal sand-binding sedge endemic to New Zealand and the sole species in its genus. It has bronze green young foliage that matures deep golden shade, a colour that is retained even on plants that have died and dried off. The flower and seed heads are brown. The dried foliage was a popular with Maori for weaving. In many areas this plant has become rare in the wild due to displacement by introduced species. However, in recent years its ecology has been quite extensively studied and large areas replanted.
