Dahlia Photos

This is the opening page for our selection of pictures of dahlias. The photos are divided into two categories: the wild dahlia species, including their cultivars, and the fancy-flowered garden hybrids. Dahlia is a daisy family (Asteraceae) genus of around 30 species of tuberous perennials found from Mexico to Colombia. The genus is named after Dr. Andreas Dahl (1751–1789), a Swedish botanist and includes plants ranging from 30cm tall bedding types to those like Dahlia imperialis that can grow from nothing to 6m tall in one season. Almost all dahlias have pinnate foliage, usually deep green, but sometimes tinted reddish purple, hollow cane-like stems and bright flowerheads. Garden dahlia hybrids are classified into ten groups based on their flower forms and range form very small singles through fancy cactus flowered cultivars to absolutely huge formal doubles.

Dahlia Species

Dahlia is a daisy family (Asteraceae) genus of around 30 species of tuberous perennials found from Mexico to Colombia. Only a few of the species are widely grown, though they have recently begun to become more popular. Dahlia imperialis, which can grow from nothing to 6m tall in one season is undeniably the most spectacular, but needs a mild climate as its flowers do not open until well into autumn.

Dahlia Hybrids

Since their introduction from Mexico, countless hybrid dahlias have been produced. As with many other large groups of garden plants they are classified into divisions based on their flower forms. There are 10 major divisions: Single-flowered, Anemone-flowered, Collarette, Waterlily, Decorative, Ball, Pompon, Cactus-flowered, Semi-cactus-flowered and Miscellaneous.
