Although cycads superficially resemble palms they are a far more ancient race of plants. They were among the dominant vegetation types for millions of years and would have been well-known to the dinosaurs but are now far less common, being found mainly in the tropics and subtropics. Some species develop a conspicuous woody trunk, while in other species the trunk is almost entirely subterranean. Male and female flowering and fruiting bodies occur on separate plants.
