Clianthus - Kaka Beak
Stock photos of Kaka Beak (Clianthus puniceus), now the only species in its genus. This 2-3m tall evergreen shrub is native to the north and north-east of New Zealand but is now very rare in the wild, though due to its popularity as a garden plant its future seems assured. Strangely for a plant that struggles in the wild, it is easily propagated and sets copious quantities of fertile seed. Its main attraction are the clusters of bright red, long-keeled, pea-like flowers that are borne most heavily in spring. Pink- and white-flowered cultivars are available.
