Clematis Photos

This is the opening page for our selection of clematis pictures. The photos are divided into species and hybrids, with the species images including cultivars of the species and several of the New Zealand clematis. The 200 or more species of the genus Clematis are scattered throughout the world's temperate regions, but most of the parents of popular, larger-flowered garden plants have come from Japan and China. Clematis are mainly climbers but a few are perennials or scrambling groundcovers. They may be deciduous or evergreen and climb by twisting their leaf-stalk tendrils about a support. Showy bell-shaped or flattish flowers with 4 to 8 petal-like sepals open at varying times depending on the type and are followed by masses of fluffy seed heads. The garden hybrids have been extensively developed over the last 100 years or so and encompass a huge range of flower forms and colours.

Clematis Hybrids

Most of the popular, larger-flowered hybrid clematis are derived from Japanese and Chinese species. They are mainly deciduous climbers with very showy flowers that open at differing times depending on the type. The hybrids are often divided into groups, such as vitcella, lanuginosa and jackmanii, based on their parentage, though this classification has fallen from favour somewhat.
