Clematis Species
The 200 or more Clematis species are scattered throughout the world’s temperate regions, but most of the popular, larger-flowered garden plants have come from Japan and China. Most are climbers but a few are perennials or scrambling groundcovers. They may be deciduous or evergreen and climb by twisting their leaf-stalk tendrils about a support. Showy bell-shaped or flattish flowers with 4 to 8 petal-like sepals open at varying times depending on the type and are followed by masses of fluffy seed heads.
