Santa Gertrudis Cattle
Stock photos of Santa Gertrudis cattle, which were named for the Santa Gertrudis river that runs through the King Ranch in southern Texas where this 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Shorthorn cross was developed. Work on the breed began around 1910 in an effort to produce good beef cattle that would thrive in a subtropical climate. By the mid-1930s the King Ranch had enough stock to begin marketing the breed and from the 1940s the Santa Gertrudis began to achieve wide recognition as a heavily muscled, long-lived breed that could thrive in a wide range of climates.
