Tulipa - Tulip
One of the main genera of spring flowering bulbs, Tulips are native to the Eurasian region, especially Central Asia. There are around 100 species and countless hybrids. The most familiar are the showy large flowered hybrids known as ‘Darwin Hybrids’. These have been raised the large flowered species Tulipa fosterana. Enthusiasts grow many of the smaller species and hybrids but of the smaller forms most gardeners are familiar only with the so-called ‘Rock Tulips’. These hybrids of Tulipa greigii and Tulipa kaufmanniana are short stemmed and compact. They often have attractively marked foliage. Tulip hybrids are available in virtually every colour and flower form. Among the more interesting are the doubles, the unusually shaped 'Parrot Tulips', the serrated petalled 'Fringed Tulips' and the bicolour or multi-colour forms.
