Colchicum - Autumn Crocus
Known as Autumn Crocus, Meadow Saffron or Naked Ladies, Colchicum is a genus of around 45 species of corms found from eastern Europe to North Africa and eastwards to China. Although not related to the true crocuses, the name Autumn Crocus is an apt description of the habit and appearance of many of the species. The plants are dormant and leafless in summer. Their flowers have 6 petals, usually in 2 whorls, and start to appear from early autumn before the foliage develops. Double-flowered forms are available. Colchicum is the source of the cancer treatment drug colchicine, which is also sometimes used to produce new plant cultivars.
