Amaryllis
Not to be confused with the plants of the genus Central and South American genus Hippeastrum, which are commonly called amaryllis, the true Amaryllis species occurs in South Africa. There is just one species in the genus: Amaryllis belladonna. There were formerly many more but these have now been reclassified into several other genera. The Belladonna Lily or Naked Ladies, as the plant is commonly known, is spring and summer dormant, flowering from late summer until early winter and starting to bloom before the strappy leaves develop.
