This is the opening page for our selection of bromeliad pictures. The bromeliads are a family of Central and South American plants, many of them epiphytic. While the rosette-forming types with their central water reservoir are well known, bromeliads are actually very variable and cover a wide range of forms. This variability is perhaps most clearly seen in the genus Tillandsia.
Bromeliads are cultivated for their form, foliage and flowers and one, the pineapple (Ananas comosus) is widely grown for its succulent edible fruit. The foliage can be intricately marked and coloured and the flowers may themselves be showy or can be surrounded by brightly coloured bracts.
