Puya
Puya is a genus of over 160 species of mainly terrestrial bromeliads, many of which will tolerate light to moderate frosts and which can make a strikingly different and interesting addition to warm temperate gardens. Those most often seen in cultivation tend to come from Chile and Argentina, though the genus extends over much of South America and north to Costa Rica.
Puya tend to be large and bushy, with massed rosettes of spine-edged leaves. Their flowers are brilliantly coloured and borne on tall stems that can extend to several metres long. Most are pollinated by nectar-feeding birds and will attract birds to the garden.
