Ostriches

The Ostrich (Struthio camelus) is a southern African ratite and the largest living bird, growing to well over 1.8m tall. It can run at 60kmph and lives 50–75 years. Today it is farmed primarily for its meat, though when the first attempts at domestication were made in the 19th century the large plume feathers were the main consideration. The feathers still have their uses and admirers but are now largely a by-product.
