This genus is made up of around 300 species of mostly aromatic annuals, biennials, perennials, subshrubs and shrubs that are found throughout the northern temperate regions and also in western South America and southern Africa. Some have medicinal uses, others are used for making a potent liquor, but most are grown as ornamantals, principally for their ornamental foliage.
