Petunia
Petunia is a South American genus of around 35 species of annuals and perennials. Most of the petunias seen in gardens are hybrids of a fairly complex background, which sees them grouped under the catchall name of Petunia x hybrida. Although many of them are perennials, in all but the mildest gardens they tend to be treated as annuals. Extensive breeding has given rise to many mixed colour seedling strains in a huge range of colours and forms. For the plants sometimes sold as "perennial petunias" please see Calibrachoa.
