Picture: Scoria is one of the products of volcanic eruptions. It is usually formed as bubbly crust-like layer on top of lava flows and is usually dark brown to black, but where oxidation occurs it may be red-brown like this example at Purau, Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand.
