Stock Photo: 08 Blade Shearing: Weighing Image ID CFG8108

Picture: Weighing the fleece from a demonstration of old-style blade shearing using hand shears. Hand shearers in the 19th century averaged around 100 sheep per day and not surprisingly this method soon disappeared when shearing machines became common, as they increased output to over 400 sheep per sheared. This demonstration involved a competition to guess the weight of the fleece, hence the weighing.
