Picture: Fallen foliage and acorns of Algerian Oak or Mirbeck's Oak (Quercus canariensis), a deciduous tree that can grow to 40m tall, with thick, deeply fissured bark. Despite the specific epithet, this species comes not from the Canaries but North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. It does not lose its foliage until the first hard frosts, develops little or no autumn colour and in mild areas it may be semi-evergreen. Each fertile acorns is often subtended by several small sterile fruits.
