Stock Photo: Romney Cross EweImage ID CFG6012

Although quite sure-footed in hilly country, sheep can slide on damp ground and fatal falls or broken legs are not uncommon. This Romney Cross is slipping as she attempts to go downhill in a field of tussock on the Port Hills above Christchurch, New Zealand. The New Zealand Romney is a development of the British Romney Marsh, which first arrived in NZ in 1853. It is a tough, adaptable, self-sufficient breed with good meat and fleece production.
