Stock Photo: 07 Limestone BoulderImage ID CFG4946

Picture: Limestone soils in North Canterbury, New Zealand extend to the coast where they are eroded into rugged cliff and outcrops. This are is rich in fossils and the limestone water quickly solidifies around shells and other objects. Near-spherical boulders are common as the limestone builds up around a central core. They are quite different in structure from the superficially similar Moeraki Boulders. When left exposed, away from the tide, the boulders soon erode.
