Stock Photo: 11 Water RaceImage ID CFG4701

Picture: Remains of a goldminer's water race at Ross, South Westland, New Zealand. Gold was discovered around Ross in 1865 and sparked the West Coast gold rush, which saw the arrival of many miners from the earlier Californian and Australian rushes as well as immigrants from Europe and Asia. Water was vital for extracting the gold and of course for drinking.
