Picture: The catkins of the White Alder (Alnus rhombifolia), a tree to 20m tall with an open, spreading crown. Deciduous in cold winters it retains some foliage in mild areas and flowers in winter. It has attractive pale bark and its catkins are yellow-green, not purple-tinted like those of the more common Alnus glutinosa. The long catkins are the male or pollen catkins, and the short are the female or seed catkins.
