Stock Photo: Desmoschoenus spiralis Image ID CFGg720

Picture: Pikao, Pingao or Golden Sand Sedge (Desmoschoenus spiralis), a sedge endemic to New Zealand that helps bind sand dunes by trapping wind-blown sand with its long rhizomatous roots and foliage crown. Here its foliage moving in the wind has described a circle around the plant, which clearly shows how it has trapped a mound of sand around its base. This once common species plays a vital role in stabilising dunes and encouraging a diversity of plants but is now endangered.
