Stock Photo: Bergenia cordifolia Image ID CFGf282

Picture: The flowerhead of Pigsqueak (Bergenia cordifolia), a hardy perennial native to Siberia. The large leaves are near-evergreen in mild climates. Its flowers, on reddish stems up to 30cm high, open from late winter. The common name supposedly comes from the squeals of delight given by pigs on finding the rhizomes, though it may also be because of the noise produced by rubbing the wet foliage.
