Stock Photo: Jubilee Clock Image ID CFGe991

Picture: The Jubilee Clock or Victoria Street Clock Tower was erected as part of the celebrations for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. The top clock tower section was originally commissioned in the late 1850s and was built in England and sent to New Zealand in 147 sections. It was to be erected on the Canterbury Provincial Chambers but was too heavy for that structure. After many years in various temporary locations the clock tower was incorporated into the volcanic stone block base on which it now stands but was originally sited at the corner of High and Manchester Streets and was not moved to it current site and the Victoria, Montreal and Salisbury Streets corner until 1930 - quite a gestation period. The tower was fully refurbished in 2003-04.
